Time for some serious Nurburgring testing.
The Porsche Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo and Turbo S have finally arrived. The German automaker’s first all-electric car definitely won’t be its last. Next up, the Taycan Cross Turismo. It won’t be your ordinary station wagon, as this spy video recently shot at the Nurburgring proves. While the Taycan Turbo S is already battling the Tesla Model S to be the world’s fastest all-electric vehicle to run the Green Hell, the Taycan Cross Turismo could very well become the world’s fastest EV wagon. In fact, there currently is no other EV wagon on the market.
YouTuber Carspotter Jeroen took this video showcasing a thinly disguised Taycan Cross Turismo prototype hitting the ‘Ring. The black tape hiding the part of the headlights and various other body sections fools no one; we know exactly what this car is. Amusingly, Porsche even used those fake exhausts once again. All fakeness aside, what’s clear is that the Taycan Cross Turismo is extremely fast.
We don’t know what level of power output its batteries provide, but chances are Porsche will go all-out here (Taycan Turbo or Turbo S power) because the Cross Turismo has one drawback: extra weight. Its wagon body style simply requires more metal and, therefore, weight.
It was a couple of years ago at Geneva when Porsche first unveiled the Cross Turismo concept which, according to sources, strongly resembles the production-spec version – just as the Taycan looks awfully similar to the Mission E concept. Despite wagons not exactly being the most popular body style, particularly in the US, Porsche could be on to something here.
The Cross Turismo’s design is definitely unique and Porsche is certainly no stranger to wagons; the Panamera Sport Turismo is proof. But will a pure battery-powered, high-performance wagon find tons of buyers like the standard Taycan has? Time will tell. We expect the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo will debut sometime in 2020.
